The Korea Tourism Organization announced on May 8 that it has, for the first time in Korea, successfully secured the hosting rights for the '2027 International Symposium on Photonics and Electromagnetics Research (PIERS)' in collaboration with Hannam University and the Daejeon Tourism Organization.
The Korea Tourism Organization, together with Hannam University and the Daejeon Tourism Organization, formed a joint bidding committee and carried out systematic efforts to attract the event. During the bid presentation held on May 6 (local time) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, they actively highlighted Korea's competitiveness as a host for international conferences and the strengths of Daejeon, ultimately succeeding in bringing the 2027 PIERS to Daejeon.
PIERS is an international academic conference that rotates among countries worldwide and was launched in 1989 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States. More than 1,500 domestic and international experts in photonics and electromagnetics participate to present research achievements and exchange the latest technologies.
The 2027 PIERS will be held over five days in May 2027 at the Daejeon Convention Center. The Korea Tourism Organization expects that more than 1,300 foreign participants from 40 countries will attend, and the resulting economic impact is anticipated to reach approximately 5.3 billion won.
Jung Changuk, Director of the MICE Division at the Korea Tourism Organization, stated, "Securing the hosting rights for 'PIERS 2027' in Korea for the first time is the result of a successful bidding strategy that actively leveraged the strengths of the host region's infrastructure." He added, "The Korea Tourism Organization will continue to make every effort to attract large-scale international conferences by combining strategies that utilize the region's key industries and infrastructure."
