Prevention of Wage, Rental Fee, and Subcontract Payment Arrears
On May 7, Hongseong County in South Chungcheong Province announced that it will operate a Wage Arrears Reporting Center to prevent wage arrears and unpaid rental fees for workers during the implementation of government-funded construction projects.
The targets include construction projects worth 20 million won or more, service contracts worth 10 million won or more, and any other workplaces that the Hongseong County Governor deems necessary for operating government-funded construction projects without wage arrears.
To this end, the county revised the "Ordinance on Operating Government-Funded Construction Projects Without Wage Arrears in Hongseong County" in April and plans to operate the Wage Arrears Reporting Center 24 hours a day, year-round, starting in May.
Wage arrears can be reported by phone or in writing. During daytime hours, reports should be made to the contract management department, while at night and on holidays, reports should be made to the duty office.
This applies to wage arrears for workers directly involved in government-funded construction projects commissioned by Hongseong County, as well as unpaid rental fees arising from construction equipment lease agreements.
The county plans to actively address wage arrears by promptly verifying and taking action on reports, thereby protecting the rights and interests of construction workers and encouraging the exit of unreliable construction companies from the market.
Jang Donghun, head of the county accounting department, stated, "We will do our utmost to ensure that construction workers do not suffer from unpaid wages or construction equipment rental fees by actively implementing measures to prevent wage arrears."
