Kim Taeheum, Governor of Chungnam Province, embarked on a four-day, two-night business trip to Singapore from May 7 to May 10, in his capacity as Chair of the Under2 Coalition Asia-Pacific region, to attend the Asia Climate Action Summit and participate in related activities.
This trip aims to allow Chungnam Province, which is leading global carbon neutrality as Korea's Special Carbon Neutral Economy Province, to share its achievements in responding to the climate crisis with the world and to seek ways to expand cooperation.
The Asia Climate Action Summit is an international conference organized by the Under2 Coalition, bringing together representatives of local governments and climate experts from across Asia to discuss challenges, solutions, and cooperation strategies in achieving net zero in the region.
This year's summit, held on May 8, features a range of discussions under the following agendas: climate response in Asia, investment strategies for realizing Asia's green roadmap, and competition in Asian climate technology and innovation.
On May 8, Governor Kim will begin his official schedule by attending the "Energy Productivity (EP) 100 Roundtable," where he will deliver a keynote speech.
EP100 is a campaign led by the Climate Group, the secretariat of the Under2 Coalition, to help companies improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and accelerate the transition to clean energy.
Following the roundtable, Governor Kim is scheduled to meet with Ahmad Luthfi, Governor of Central Java Province in Indonesia; hold talks with the Under2 Coalition Director of Local Government Policy; meet with Champa Patel, Under2 Coalition Director of Local Government Policy; and have a meeting with Dipali Khanna, Asia Regional Director of the Rockefeller Foundation.
As his final official activity at the summit, Governor Kim will attend the Under2 Coalition Asia Climate Summit, where he will deliver a keynote address and propose strategies to strengthen the role of Asian local governments in achieving carbon neutrality.
On the last day of his trip, May 9, Governor Kim will visit sites related to key provincial projects for benchmarking, meet with the Ambassador of Singapore, attend a meeting with the Chief Executive of Singapore's National Water Agency, and tour Marina Barrage.
An official from the province stated, "Although Chungnam is a region with high carbon emissions due to the concentration of coal-fired power plants, it has been recognized as Korea's Special Carbon Neutral Economy Province because it has implemented world-class policies, such as proclaiming itself a Special Carbon Neutral Economy Province, declaring '2045 Carbon Neutrality' five years ahead of the national plan, promoting the phased shutdown of coal-fired power plants, and pushing for the enactment of a special law to support regions affected by the closure of coal-fired power plants."
