Fleeing After Police Arrive for Stunt Driving and Noise
Illegal Modifications Punishable...
"Strict Response Even on Public Holidays"
In the early hours of Children's Day, a group of motorcycle riders sped through downtown Gwangju, prompting a series of 112 emergency calls from citizens.
According to the Gwangsan Police Station on May 5, at around 12:17 a.m. that day, a group of motorcycles was reported for making loud noises while racing near the KB Kookmin Bank intersection in Suwan-dong, Gwangsan-gu. During that time frame alone, there were 10 reports related to the motorcycle group.
According to the police, the riders weaved across lanes and performed stunt driving, causing nearby drivers and residents to complain about threats and noise disturbances. In response to the reports, police officers stationed nearby were dispatched to issue dispersal orders and conduct enforcement, but most of the riders scattered and fled the scene.
Under current law, motorcycles must not exceed the certified exhaust noise standard. Owners are required to keep noise levels within 5 dB of the exhaust noise test results. Violations can result in criminal or administrative penalties under the Automobile Management Act. Illegal modifications to mufflers or headlights are punishable by up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 10 million won.
A police official stated, "Reckless riding is repeatedly occurring not only on national holidays but also on other public holidays, so we are deploying additional patrol officers," adding, "We will respond strictly to reckless driving that threatens traffic safety and causes anxiety among citizens."
