Willingly Step Forward to Save the Lives of Neighbors
In Seongdong-gu, Seoul (District Mayor: Jeong Wonoh), heroes who remained calm in emergency situations and took the lead in saving the precious lives of their neighbors are drawing attention.
On April 25, Eunsil Lee, the head of the 18th administrative district of Haengdang 1-dong (Dong Chief: Lee Makrae), discovered an elderly person who had lost consciousness due to cardiac arrest and a woman calling for help at the crosswalk near Muhak Girls’ High School intersection in Haengdang-dong. Lee immediately began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and, alternating with another citizen, continued chest compressions. With help from bystanders, she calmly checked the number of compressions and the pulse, and the elderly person gradually regained consciousness. The 119 emergency rescue team arrived at the scene and safely transported the elderly person to Hanyang University Hospital.
Lee said that her experience of being taken to the emergency room due to her chronic arrhythmia prompted her to consistently study emergency response techniques, which greatly helped her. She also noted that just three days before the incident, on April 22, she had refreshed her CPR skills during a civil defense unit leader training, which proved invaluable in this crisis.
Additionally, on April 8, Koh Yoohyuk, a swimming instructor at Seongdong-gu Residents’ Sports Center (89 Wangsimni-ro), saved a woman who had collapsed from cardiac arrest. While patrolling near the sports center, he heard that someone had collapsed, brought an automated external defibrillator (AED), and immediately began CPR. Although he injured his leg while rushing to get the rescue kit, saving the citizen was his top priority. He continued CPR until the 119 emergency rescue team arrived, ultimately saving her life.
On April 30, near Yongbi Shelter (5 Jungnangcheonseo Bicycle Road), the Korea Military Academy triathlon team, who were training nearby, provided emergency aid to an elderly person who had collapsed and lost consciousness, saving his life. Captain Moon Mirim and Cadet Yeom Kwanho (senior) quickly performed CPR, while Cadet Hong Jisang (junior) ran to retrieve the AED stationed at Yongbi Shelter. Triathlon coach Oh Younghwan promptly reported the situation to 119 and assisted with emergency measures. Thanks to their swift actions, the elderly person regained consciousness and was safely handed over to the 119 rescue team.
District Mayor Jeong Wonoh stated, "I believe those of you who did not turn away from your neighbors in crisis and willingly stepped forward to save precious lives are the true heroes of our time, and I extend my deepest gratitude." He added, "Since CPR played a major role in these emergency situations, we will work to further promote emergency response education so that all residents can help protect each other's lives and safety."
