On May 3, the city of Gwangju held the "103rd Children's Day Event" at the City Hall Citizen Hall. This year, the city organized the event on the first day of the holiday, taking into account that Children's Day coincided with Buddha's Birthday and that families might have other plans due to the extended holiday period. The event was originally scheduled to take place outdoors on the lawn plaza, but was inevitably moved indoors due to weather conditions.
The event was attended by Mayor Kang Kijeong, National Assembly member Jeon Jinsook, Gwangju City Council member Choi Jihyun, and more than 800 children and parents, who created joyful memories together. On this day, Mayor Kang also played the "Mugunghwa Flower Has Bloomed" game with the children.
In addition, a variety of experience programs were prepared, including a juggling circus, an omnibus magic show, a live karaoke with a DJ, and a children's random dance. The large air bounce playground, nail, hair, and hat art experiences, family photo frame and character fan making booths, as well as food booths offering cotton candy and popcorn, were also very popular at the venue.
In particular, Kim Yeeun, a trot prodigy from Gwangju and a fourth grader at Wolgok Elementary School, made a surprise appearance and delivered an exciting performance. In celebration of Children's Day, Kim Yeeun donated 3.1 million won to four children, including those who have suffered abuse, to help cover the cost of school supplies and academy fees.
One child who participated in the event said, "I had so much fun playing the 'Mugunghwa Flower Has Bloomed' game and eating snacks. I feel great." A parent who attended with their child commented, "During the Children's Day holiday, everywhere is crowded and it's stressful to go out. I'm grateful that the city hall provided a safe and free place for children to enjoy themselves."
Mayor Kang stated, "I will do my best to ensure that children can grow up healthy, happy, and with a bright future," and added, "Let's work together to make Gwangju a city where children's laughter never stops and where moms and dads are happy."
