Accelerating Preparations for the Opening of the Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Center on June 13
The Dongnam Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences (Director: Lee Changhun) is accelerating preparations for the opening of its Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Center, which is scheduled to open on June 13, 2025.
The institute announced on May 2 that Jongbok Jeong, the mayor of Gijang County, visited the site in person on the same day to inspect the center’s preparation status.

The establishment of the Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Center is the first municipality-led essential healthcare enhancement project jointly promoted by the local government and residents. The goal is to build a healthcare system based on actual living areas, rather than administrative boundaries.
This project is being carried out in cooperation among Busan City, Gijang County, and the Residents’ Council of Seosaeng-myeon, Ulju County.
To operate the center, the institute has recruited additional specialists in neurosurgery and cardiology, and reinforced its medical staff by hiring two nurses and three radiologic technologists, for a total of five new personnel. The center was created by fully remodeling the third floor of the main building and is equipped with a rapid response system for emergency procedures and treatments, utilizing its proximity to the intensive care unit and operating room.
In addition, advanced equipment such as a robotic digital surgical microscope and an angiography device has been introduced, and an additional MRI machine is scheduled to be installed in the future. Professor Jang Kyungsoo of Seoul Catholic University Incheon St. Mary’s Hospital has been appointed as the center director and has been leading the preparations for several months.
The center plans to go beyond simple emergency treatment by establishing an integrated care system that includes the development of prevention-focused programs, early rehabilitation linkage, and reduction of mortality and sequelae, thereby serving as a central hub for regional emergency medical institutions.
During the on-site inspection, Mayor Jongbok Jeong stated, "Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases are conditions where the golden hour determines life or death. As meaningful medical infrastructure is being established in Gijang County, I hope that any initial operational challenges will be actively addressed through close discussions with the county."
The Gijang County Council recently submitted a proposal to the National Assembly and the government, urging the expansion of medical infrastructure. The proposal stated, "Although Gijang County has the fastest-growing population in the country, it still remains a medically underserved area. To resolve this, the number of beds at the institute should be increased from 300 to 500."
