Realizing a Clean Yeongju Free from Waste Concerns
Yeongju City in North Gyeongsang Province has completed the fourth phase expansion of its sanitary landfill in response to the expected end of use of the third phase facility. The city promoted the expansion project from December 2021 to November 2024, received approval for use from North Gyeongsang Province, and will begin operations in May.
The fourth phase expansion project of the sanitary landfill involved a vertical extension of the landfill, securing an additional landfill capacity of 493,244 square meters. The project was completed with a total budget of 6.9 billion won, including 2 billion won from the national government, 1.5 billion won from the provincial government, and 3.4 billion won from the city government.
With this expansion, Yeongju City has established a foundation to stably landfill municipal waste generated until 2055. The city is now equipped with advanced landfill facilities that can minimize secondary environmental pollution, such as leachate leakage and odor generation. This is expected to make a significant contribution to preserving the local environment and improving public health and sanitation for residents.
Hwang Unho, Director of the Yeongju City Environmental Project Office, stated, "With this landfill expansion, we can create a Yeongju City free from concerns about waste," adding, "We will thoroughly manage landfill operations and do our utmost to ensure the convenience and happiness of our citizens."
