Discovering Hidden Culinary Talents to Feature on Expressway Service Area Menus
Total Prize Money of 2.1 Million Won, Open to All Residents
The Daegu Gyeongbuk Headquarters of Korea Expressway Corporation will hold a cooking competition to find the "number one taste" of Daegu and Gyeongbuk.
Korea Expressway Corporation Daegu Gyeongbuk Headquarters has embarked on a quest to find hidden culinary masters.
On April 29, the Expressway Corporation's Daegu Gyeongbuk Headquarters announced that it will host the "Daegu Gyeongbuk Best Taste! Quest for Hidden Culinary Masters" competition at the Nongong (Daegu-bound) Service Area on the Gwangju-Daegu Expressway during a weekday in the last week of May.
This competition has been organized to improve the quality of food at highway service areas and to discover and commercialize outstanding home-cooked dishes through the participation of local residents.
Eligibility is open to any ordinary resident of Daegu Metropolitan City or North Gyeongsang Province, as long as they are not restaurant business owners. The focus is on home-style dishes commonly enjoyed at home, such as Korean cuisine and noodles. Rather than expensive ingredients, the emphasis is on culinary skill and care.
Applications are accepted by email until May 16. After a document screening process, the final 10 teams will advance to the finals. The finals will be held on-site, where participants will present their dishes in person.
A total of 2.1 million won in prize money will be awarded to the winners: 1st place will receive 1 million won (one team), 2nd place 500,000 won (one team), and 3rd place 200,000 won (three teams). The winning dishes will also be introduced as actual menu items at the service area restaurants.
Yoo Hosik, head of the headquarters, said, "Through this competition, we aim to shed new light on the culinary skills of our parents' generation, rather than on expensive ingredients," adding, "We hope this will contribute not only to improving the quality of highway service area food but also to revitalizing the local economy."
