Supreme Court to Rule on May 1 in Lee Jae Myung Election Law Appeal
Democratic Party: "A Verdict in Line with Common Sense and Reason"
People Power Party: "A Matter of Upholding the Foundations of Democracy"
Regarding the Supreme Court's upcoming ruling on May 1 in the appeal case of Lee Jae Myung, the Democratic Party's presidential candidate, for alleged violations of the Public Official Election Act, both the Democratic Party and the People Power Party expressed hopes for a "common-sense verdict," but their stances were sharply divided.
Cho Seungrae, chief spokesperson for the Democratic Party, briefly stated in an oral commentary on this day, "The date for the Supreme Court's ruling on candidate Lee's Public Official Election Act case has been set for the 1st. We hope the court will deliver a wise judgment in line with common sense and reason."

Previously, the Supreme Court announced that it would deliver its verdict in the appeal case of candidate Lee's alleged violation of the Public Official Election Act at 3 p.m. on May 1 in the main courtroom. This decision comes just 34 days after the case was filed with the Supreme Court on March 28, and only 9 days after it was referred to the plenary session on April 22.
Shin Dongwook, chief spokesperson for the People Power Party, also stated, "We hope for a verdict on the 'Lee Jae Myung Election Law' case that is consistent with common sense, justice, and legal principles." Shin added, "It is fortunate that a decision was made to reach a prompt judgment. Now, the time for judgment has come; it can no longer be postponed or avoided."
He emphasized, "This ruling goes beyond simply determining Lee Jae Myung's guilt or innocence; it is about upholding the very foundation of democracy in the Republic of Korea. The Supreme Court must make its decision unwaveringly, based solely on the law and conscience."
Although both sides called for a verdict based on the court's common sense and the judges' conscience, their objectives differ. The Democratic Party hopes the Supreme Court will uphold the acquittal verdict Lee received in the second trial. In contrast, the People Power Party appears to expect the Supreme Court to overturn the appellate court's decision and remand the case to the Seoul High Court, citing a misinterpretation of the law and based on the guilty verdict in the first trial.
