Pohang ranked first in the increase of domestic travel destination searches in the "May Golden Holiday Domestic Travel Trends" survey released by the digital travel platform Booking.com.
Booking.com reported that, based on an analysis of search data on its platform ahead of the upcoming golden holiday (April 30 to May 6), Pohang recorded the highest search growth rate compared to the same period last year.
This demonstrates that Pohang is being re-evaluated among the younger generation as an emotional marine tourism destination, moving beyond its image as an industrial city.
Recently, Pohang has been rapidly transforming into a "must-visit marine tourism city" by expanding tourism infrastructure, such as revitalizing marine leisure, introducing new attractions like Spacewalk, and developing the Homiban Peninsula Marine Trail.
In particular, Pohang has frequently appeared as a filming location for popular dramas such as "My Perfect Secretary," and themed travel courses linked to these drama locations are gaining popularity among tourists.
Additionally, Pohang's unique tourist attractions?including Yeongildae Beach, Homigot Sunrise Plaza, and the night view of POSCO?are spreading by word of mouth on social media, attracting travelers seeking "healing trips."
Open coastal scenery, scenic driving routes, and local culinary experiences such as Pohang Mulhoe are also enhancing the city's appeal.
Pohang City is making thorough preparations to welcome tourists during the May holiday period, capitalizing on this momentum.
To boost travel demand, the city is strengthening promotional efforts, conducting service inspections of tourism-related facilities such as restaurants, accommodations, and traditional markets, and improving traffic flow and parking around major tourist sites.
Special guidance activities are also being conducted to prevent price gouging, and strict hygiene management is being implemented in restaurants.
Furthermore, the city is focusing all administrative resources on environmental maintenance at major tourist destinations such as the Homiban Peninsula Marine Trail and Spacewalk, aiming to provide visitors during the holiday period with a comfortable and highly satisfying travel experience.
Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, "The fact that Pohang is attracting nationwide attention proves that it has established itself as a truly popular marine tourist destination," adding, "We will continue to actively discover marine tourism resources and expand various programs tailored to young sensibilities, further enhancing Pohang's unique appeal."
