'Daerim Station Exit 12 to Daerim Central Market Entrance' Designated as Intensive Maintenance Zone
Meetings and Campaigns Encourage Voluntary Improvement and Awareness Among Merchants
Yeongdeungpo District (District Mayor Choi Hokwon) announced that it has focused on clearing illegal street obstructions in Daerim-dong to create a pleasant and safe street environment, thereby improving pedestrian convenience.
The district has designated the area from Exit 12 of Daerim Station to the entrance of Daerim Central Market (Digital-ro 37-gil) as a priority zone for intensive management due to its poor pedestrian environment. According to the Korea Road Traffic Authority's Traffic Accident Analysis System, this section accounts for 30% of all traffic accidents in Daerim-dong and is notorious for the proliferation of illegal obstructions, advertisements, unauthorized street vendors, and signboards.
In response, since the beginning of the year, the district has held seven meetings with merchants, police, fire authorities, and foreign community groups to explain the need for improvement and request their cooperation. Banners were installed at key points, and informational notices were distributed to stores.
In addition, the district conducted a "Pleasant Daerim-dong Street" campaign with over 100 members of professional organizations and residents to encourage voluntary improvement by merchants and to urge compliance with street order, calling for the interest and participation of all.
Furthermore, the district deployed additional enforcement personnel and strengthened patrols to encourage the voluntary removal of obstructions and fixed facilities that encroached on the roads.
As a result, sidewalks and roads that had been narrowed by obstructions have been widened, making passage smoother for pedestrians, wheelchair users, and strollers, while also improving driver safety. Abandoned obstructions throughout the area have been cleared, enhancing the city's appearance.
Going forward, the district plans to impose fines on merchants who leave illegal street stalls and obstructions unattended. If violations are not corrected, the district will take strong measures such as forced removal and criminal prosecution. The district also announced its commitment to thorough management to maintain the improved pedestrian environment.
Choi Hokwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District, stated, "Creating a pleasant street environment in Daerim-dong requires not only the efforts of the district office but also the interest and voluntary participation of residents and merchants," adding, "We will do our utmost to ensure Daerim-dong becomes safer and more pleasant through consistent improvement and effort."
