Gwangju Office of Education Pursues Legal Amendment for Teacher Retirement Preparation Education

"Support Needed for Retired Teachers to Start a Second Life"
Proposal to Add a Legal Basis in the Regulations on the Appointment of Educational Public Officials
Expected to Aid Social Adaptation and Reduce Honorary Retirement Allowances

The Gwangju Office of Education has taken steps to establish a legal basis for retirement preparation education, aiming to help teachers who are about to retire smoothly adapt to society.

On April 28, the Gwangju Office of Education announced that it had officially proposed an amendment to the "Regulations on the Appointment of Educational Public Officials" to the Ministry of Education on April 17. The proposed amendment is designed to support teachers who have dedicated many years to education so that they can prepare for a stable new life after retirement.

Currently, general and certain categories of public officials can receive preparatory education for reemployment and social adaptation starting one year before retirement. However, teachers are excluded from this benefit due to the absence of relevant regulations, leaving them in a blind spot. To address this issue, the Office of Education is pursuing a legal revision so that the "Retirement Preparation Education System for Public Officials" administered by the Ministry of Personnel Management can be equally applied to educational public officials.

The core of the amendment is the introduction of a new provision for retirement preparation education in the "Regulations on the Appointment of Educational Public Officials." The Office of Education expects that, if the law is amended, it will help ensure the stability of teachers' retirement, support their adaptation to society, and reduce the payment of honorary retirement allowances.

Superintendent Lee Jungseon stated, "It is necessary to provide institutional support so that teachers leaving the classroom can design a happy life after retirement," and added, "I hope this proposed amendment will be accepted and lead to improved teacher welfare."
