The 46th Seoul Theater Festival will open on May 1. For about two months, until June 30, eight officially selected productions and thirty entries in the free competition category will be staged throughout Seoul, including the Daehak-ro area.
The eight officially selected productions are: "The Stranger" by Sadari Movement Laboratory, "San-Jae Diary" by Tom's Knout Theater Company, "Principle" by Theater Baeda, "Carthage" by Theater Secret Base, "Night of Silver" by Gonggan X Hwatgime Park Moonsu Project, "Sara in Wonderland" by Creative Group Sangsangdumoek, "100 Hours at the Residence" by Neverending Play, and "Place" by Theater Chariot of Fire.
Among the free competition entries are "I Just Wanted to Make Harmony" by Theater Bridge, "Death and the Maiden" by Theater Moojikyung, and "Othello - Two Eras" by Theater Danzam.
The Seoul Theater Festival, the largest theater festival in the Seoul area, is organized by the Seoul Theater Association and sponsored by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, and Seoul Theater Creation Center. It began in 1977 as the "Korea Theater Festival."
The opening ceremony will be held at 5:00 p.m. on May 7 at the Seoul Theater Creation Center's Seoul Theater Zero, hosted by actors Kim Sunyoung and Yoo Youngjae.
Prior to the opening ceremony, from 4:00 p.m., a photo zone and interviews will be held at the main entrance of the Seoul Theater Creation Center as a pre-event. Then, starting at 4:30 p.m., a performance by the brass band "Wave Brass" will take place on the Gwanseup-ro stairs at the Seoul Theater Creation Center. The main opening ceremony will feature a congratulatory performance by the "Seongbuk Dream Tree" children's choir from Seongbuk Elementary School, as well as introductions to the officially selected productions and free competition entries.
This year's Seoul Theater Festival will also introduce a new section curated by the Seoul Theater Festival Arts Committee, called the Choice Section. The Choice Section will feature three productions: "Now, Ms. Jeongae!" by Theater Iru, "Shall We Talk at the Karaoke?" by Theater Sonyeon, and "Habub" by Theater Moonjibang. In addition, one international exchange performance, "On the S Plateau" by Cheongnyeondan, will be presented.
In addition to the officially selected productions, free competition entries, and Arts Committee Choice performances, the 46th Seoul Theater Festival will also offer a variety of participatory events, including the "It-Dahta Boeboe Exhibition," a group visual art exhibition by Boeboe artists themed around this year's festival slogan "It-Dahta"; a pop-up book exhibition titled "Flower, You Bloom in Full"; a "Performance Photo Exhibition" by photographers; "I Can Hear Your Voice," a stage that was not officially performed; the "World's Best Cup-Kicking" competition for theater professionals; and forums.
