How Will Daegu Develop Five Former Military Sites? City Launches Task Force

Daegu City has established the "Task Force for the Development of Former Military Sites" to strengthen interdepartmental collaboration and to promote development projects for former military sites in the city center in a more systematic and strategic manner.

Previously, on March 19, Daegu City announced the "Development Plan for Former Military Sites," which includes specialized development strategies for each site focused on high value-added future industries such as medical care, finance, education, and advanced industries. The launch of this task force is a follow-up measure to enhance the feasibility of this plan and to secure practical momentum for project implementation.

According to the proposed development plan for each former military site, a world-class hospital-centered comprehensive medical cluster is being considered for the 2nd Operational Command; a finance-centered urban complex town for the 5th Logistics Support Command; a future-oriented international education hub for the former sites of the Air Defense Artillery School and the 1st Missile Brigade; and a center for future advanced industries for the 50th Infantry Division.

The task force, led by Hong Sungju, Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs of Daegu City, consists of 11 bureaus and departments and 17 working-level divisions, forming an organization with expertise in each field. It will operate temporarily until the development of the former military sites is complete.

The main roles of the task force include detailing the implementation strategies for the proposed development plan, seeking ways to link with national projects, reviewing regulatory easing and institutional improvements, and examining potential overlaps with other development plans within downtown Daegu.

Going forward, Daegu City plans to closely manage the progress of the projects through regular meetings and working-level reviews, starting with the first full task force planning meeting (Kick-off Meeting) in May.

Additionally, the city will focus its efforts on ensuring that the "Creation of New Growth Spaces through Relocation of Military Bases in the City Center," which was selected as a local pledge for Daegu in the 21st presidential election on April 24, is adopted as a national policy project. Through this, the city aims to increase the feasibility and effectiveness of the development of the former military sites.

Kim Jeongki, Acting Mayor and Deputy Mayor for Administrative Affairs of Daegu, stated, "The former military sites secured through the relocation of military bases in the city center are not just land to be used, but are core growth hubs that will shape Daegu’s next 100 years. We will thoroughly prepare the development plans from the initial stages, centering on the task force, and do our utmost to ensure the project's success."
