Learning and Career Mentoring Program with University Student Mentors in Geumcheon-gu
Geumcheon-gu (District Mayor Yoo Seonghun) announced that it will operate a "University Student Learning Mentoring Program" for elementary, middle, and high school students, in which university student mentors participate.
The "University Student Learning Mentoring" program is a community-based peer mentoring initiative where students can discuss and resolve concerns about study methods and career paths with university student mentors. In the first half of the year, the program supports fourth to sixth grade elementary school students, while in the second half, it targets middle school students, and during the summer and winter vacations, high school students. The program provides integrated support for activities such as "Finding My Own Study Method," "Forming Study Habits," and "Subject-Specific Study Methods."
Mentors were selected through an open recruitment process and recommendations from high schools. Eligible mentors are university students currently attending universities in the Seoul metropolitan area who graduated from local high schools. By connecting university students from various majors with local students, the program aims to offer students the experience of "studying together" rather than alone and to help them gain a broader perspective on learning and career paths.
Regular mentoring sessions are held once a week at the Geumcheon Career and Academic Guidance Center. Mentors plan to use teaching materials and activity journals (reflection worksheets) to guide younger students in practical study strategies, time management, and setting self-directed goals.
During the preliminary training held on April 19 at the Geumcheon Career and Academic Guidance Center, selected university student mentors and elementary school students gathered to introduce themselves and build rapport.
Additionally, essential information such as the program schedule, mentoring goal setting, and activity guidelines was shared before the official start of activities.
An elementary school student who participated in the preliminary training said, "The training was fun, and I am looking forward to working with a great mentor." A university student mentor commented, "I had similar concerns when I was younger, so I can empathize with my juniors. I will do my best in mentoring to provide even a small amount of help."
A district official stated, "We are continuously recruiting outstanding university student mentors who can share their learning experiences with local juniors throughout the year. Mentors are provided with a modest activity allowance or volunteer hours, so we hope that many university students from Geumcheon-gu will show interest."
Yoo Seonghun, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, "University student mentoring is a peer learning companion education model where seniors and juniors from Geumcheon grow together. We will support students so they can discover the meaning of studying for themselves and grow independently."
