Yeosu, Suncheon, and Gwangyang Chambers Issue Joint Statement Urging Inclusion of Regional Issues in Presidential Pledges

Urgent Need for Advanced Industrial Complexes
in Petrochemicals, Steel, and Secondary Batteries

The Gwangyang Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Chairman Woo Kwangil), together with the Yeosu and Suncheon Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Chairman Han Moonseon and Chairman Lee Heungwoo), jointly issued a statement on the 24th urging that key projects driving the development of the eastern Jeonnam region be included in the presidential election pledges.

The three chambers from eastern Jeonnam emphasized the urgent need for a major transformation toward high value-added and eco-friendly industries, as well as the establishment of a national industrial complex to cluster materials industries in the Gwangyang and Suncheon areas, where there is high demand for advanced industries such as secondary batteries and functional materials. They pointed out that the petrochemical and steel industries, which have driven the national and eastern Jeonnam economies for decades, are now facing a serious structural crisis, making these changes critical for fostering future national industries.

The main points include: ▲ the promotion of a "Petrochemical and Steel Industry Mega Transformation Project" to respond to the crisis in the petrochemical and steel industries and to reorganize them into eco-friendly, high value-added, and AI industries; ▲ the designation of Gwangyang and Yeosu as "Special Industrial Crisis Response Zones"; ▲ the revision of legislation to designate the steel industry as a "National Advanced Strategic Industrial Technology"; ▲ the establishment of a second space center within the Goheung Space Launch Vehicle Special Zone to help Korea become one of the world's top five space powers; ▲ the creation of "K-Disney" as a global cultural industry hub to provide quality jobs for young people and create new urban growth engines; and ▲ the development of Yeosu Airport as the aviation hub of the southern coastal region and the expansion of ultra-wide-area transportation networks for the next 100 years.

Chairman Woo Kwangil stated, "We hope that the voices of the eastern Jeonnam business community will definitely be reflected in the presidential election pledges. In particular, we will continue to cooperate with the Yeosu and Suncheon Chambers of Commerce and Industry to ensure that Gwangyang is designated as a 'Special Industrial Crisis Response Zone' and that legislation is revised to designate the steel industry as a 'National Advanced Strategic Industrial Technology.'
