Prosecution Indicts Former President Moon Jae-in on Bribery Charges
Kwon Seongdong: "The Prosecution Made Its Decision Based on Law and Principle"
The People Power Party stated on April 24 that, regarding the prosecution's decision to indict former President Moon Jae-in without detention on bribery charges, "We hope the court will deliver a just verdict that meets the expectations of the people."
Kwon Seongdong, floor leader of the People Power Party, met with reporters after a general meeting of party lawmakers at the National Assembly that day and remarked, "We understand that the prosecution made its decision based on law and principle."
Earlier, the Jeonju District Prosecutors' Office indicted former President Moon without detention on charges of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (bribery). The prosecution has been investigating allegations of preferential hiring involving the former president's son-in-law at an airline.
Park Minyoung, spokesperson for the People Power Party, strongly criticized former President Moon in a commentary released that day, saying, "Former President Moon, who drove young people onto the streets through failed real estate policies and left them to cycle through low-quality short-term jobs with populist employment measures, would be guilty of an unforgivable crime if he abused his power to grant various privileges to his own son-in-law."
Park went on to say, "We pay tribute to the efforts and courage of the investigation team, who uncovered the substantive truth of power-related crimes and brought them to justice through an investigation without sanctuary," and urged, "Former President Moon and the Democratic Party must stop political maneuvers and reckless behavior that blind and deafen the public, and humbly accept the legal judgment that is to come."
Yoon Sanghyun, another People Power Party lawmaker, also commented on his social networking service (SNS), describing the allegations of preferential hiring for the former president's son-in-law as "the epitome of abuse of power and a criminal act, exploiting the office of the president for personal gain," and asserted, "It is a situation where anyone would inevitably suspect preferential hiring."
