Changwon and Fushun established a sister city agreement in September 1997. However, after the "Changwon City and Chinese Local Governments Economic and Tourism Cooperation Conference" held in Changwon in 2016, practical exchanges had been suspended due to factors such as the THAAD deployment and the COVID-19 pandemic.

This visit is significant as it helps bridge this gap in exchanges and lays the groundwork for practical cooperation in the future. Both cities agreed to work closely together in various fields, including the economy and culture.

In addition, the Fushun delegation visited major sites in Changwon, including Doosan Enerbility, a leading global company, Seongsan Art Hall, and Changwon’s House, where they had the opportunity to experience Changwon’s industry and culture firsthand.

Fushun is home to a population of 2.25 million and covers an area of 11,271 square kilometers. It produces about 6 million tons of coal annually and is known as the "Capital of Coal." Coal mining began during the Qing Dynasty, and the city was incorporated into Manchukuo during the Japanese occupation. Fushun is also recognized as the first aluminum production site in China and is an industrial city with active manufacturing of heavy equipment such as excavators and cranes. Although the city is currently facing a population decline due to aging industrialization, machinery, chemical, metal, tourism, and electrical industries remain its main sectors.

Wang Qinghai, Mayor of Fushun, said, "Although the schedule is short, I am very pleased to visit Changwon, our long-time friend city. I hope that exchanges between our two cities will further expand in the future."

Jang Geumyong, Acting Mayor of Changwon Special City, responded, "I hope Mayor Wang Qinghai’s visit will serve as a major turning point in revitalizing exchanges between the two cities, and I look forward to mutual growth as global partners."
