Approval Obtained for Forest Management Plan in Danyang County
Certification as a Forest Carbon Sink Also Expected
Hanil Cement and Hanil Hyundai Cement are taking the lead in the industry by cultivating forests on their owned land to reduce carbon emissions for the first time.
On April 24, Hanil Cement announced that it had obtained approval for its forest management plan from Danyang County. The company plans to preserve and manage 252 hectares of forest land it owns in Danyang County, North Chungcheong Province, as healthy forests for the next 10 years without any development. The area of this forest land is equivalent to about 350 soccer fields. Danyang County and the Danyang County Forestry Cooperative conducted on-site inspections for about three months starting in December last year before granting approval.
Hanil Cement and Hanil Hyundai Cement also plan to obtain certification as a forest carbon sink. A carbon sink refers to natural systems, such as forests or oceans, that absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and contribute to carbon neutrality. If they obtain forest carbon sink certification, which is overseen by the Korea Forest Service, development of the forest land will be restricted for 30 years, and the companies will be required to protect the forests to maintain their carbon sink function. Hanil Cement is scheduled to undergo a detailed on-site inspection in May to obtain forest carbon sink certification.
Hanil Cement continues to invest in facilities and develop technologies for carbon neutrality. To reduce fossil fuel consumption during the cement production process, the company is investing 517.9 billion won in eco-friendly facilities by 2026. In August last year, Hanil Cement also succeeded in the first domestic test casting of "carbon dioxide-injected floor mortar," accelerating the commercialization of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology.
