Vision for Achieving a Citizen-Centered Climate-Adaptive Society
Park Seungwon: "We Will Develop a Model for Active Citizen Participation"
Gwangmyeong City in Gyeonggi Province will operate a Climate Week this year and expand its renewable energy supply projects to build a citizen-centered, sustainable climate-adaptive society.
Moon Kwangho, Director of the Planning and Coordination Office of Gwangmyeong City, announced this plan at a policy briefing on the 24th, under the theme "Key Achievements and Directions of the Gwangmyeong-Style Carbon Neutrality."

To achieve carbon neutrality, the city has presented the vision of a "citizen-centered climate-adaptive society." A "climate-adaptive society" refers to a sustainable society that does not limit the climate crisis to environmental issues, but instead actively responds to the impacts of climate change across all areas of society, including policy, economy, education, welfare, and urban planning.
To this end, the city plans to operate "Gwangmyeong City Climate Week" this year, which will help raise social awareness of the climate crisis and share the necessity of joint action. Climate Week will consist of three main parts: a policy section centered on climate conferences and forums; a citizen participation and content section, including best practice sharing sessions and video contests; and a cultural program section, such as climate musicals and climate film festivals.
This year, the city will implement a renewable energy supply convergence support project with a total budget of 1 billion won. This project supports the installation costs of self-consumption renewable energy systems in public facilities, commercial buildings, and residential facilities.
The city will also promote the "Climate Response Practice Excellence Apartment Selection Project" to spread a culture of carbon neutrality in apartment complexes where energy use and resource consumption are concentrated. Among 91 complexes in the city, six apartments will be selected as outstanding examples based on their climate action practices, and each will receive a reward of up to 7 million won.
Park Seungwon, Mayor of Gwangmyeong City, said, "We will establish a model that enables citizens to actively participate in carbon neutrality and move forward as a sustainable city that can proactively respond to the climate crisis in all areas of society."
