Joint Training Session for Korean Language Officers and Korean Language Culture Centers Held
Awards Presented for Outstanding Korean Language Officers and Press Releases
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on April 24 that, together with the Federation of Korean Language Culture Centers, it will hold the "Joint Training Session for Korean Language Officers and Korean Language Culture Centers" in Busan from April 24 to 25.
This joint training session has been organized to explore ways to promote and develop the Korean language and to establish a collaborative system among Korean Language Officers. Korean Language Officers, who work in central administrative agencies, local governments, and offices of education, help improve the Korean language proficiency of staff members and support the promotion of policies using plain language.
During the training session, Korean Language Officers and press releases recognized for outstanding achievements in the previous year will be selected and awarded commendations from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Director of the National Institute of the Korean Language. The session will also include sharing of exemplary cases from each institution and discussions on strategies to advance Korean language policy. In addition, newly appointed Korean Language Officers will receive a lecture on "Using Easy and Correct Language in Public Documents," and be introduced to the official document evaluation system. Korean Language Culture Centers and Korean Language Officers from each region will gather to discuss collaborative activities to promote the Korean language within their local communities.
The top-performing institutions for Korean Language Officer achievements are as follows: the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, which used digital content to provide guidance on food and pharmaceutical terminology; the Seoul Metropolitan Government, which reviewed various policy materials for plain language and operated a "Committee for Proper Use of the Korean Language" each quarter; Jung-gu District Office in Ulsan, which established a Hangeul Promotion Committee and created a foundation for public language projects; and the Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education, which operated student clubs and teacher groups for language study and promoted inquiry-based classes on correct language use. These top institutions will receive commendations from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The following institutions were selected as excellent institutions: the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, which promoted plain language terms in road and railway sectors through various methods; the Daegu Metropolitan Government, which developed an automated tool to check administrative terminology and promoted the use of correct public language; Seongdong-gu District Office in Seoul, which produced and broadcast videos encouraging the use of easy and correct public language and operated a learning board called "Urilmalteo"; and the Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Office of Education, which produced and broadcast a public language improvement program and promoted ten key terms for improvement. These excellent institutions will receive commendations from the Director of the Korean Language Culture Center.
The press release selected as outstanding was "A Table of Holiday Foods Made with Our Grains - Wishing You a Healthy Chuseok," distributed by the Rural Development Administration in September 2024. This press release will receive a commendation from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism. It was highly rated for enhancing the readability of key vocabulary, clearly conveying difficult Sino-Korean words and unfamiliar technical terms, and for its overall accuracy of expression and clarity of sentence structure and vocabulary, making it easily understandable for the general public.
Lee Jungwoo, Director-General for Culture and Arts Policy at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, stated, "Korean Language Officers and Korean Language Culture Centers nationwide are working hard to spread beautiful and easy public language and to improve the environment for Korean language use among the public." He added, "I hope that Korean Language Officers and Korean Language Culture Centers will continue to complement each other and strive to further cultivate and preserve the beauty of our language."
