Paju City Teams Up with Institutions, Schools, and Organizations to Promote Eco-Friendly Banner Use

Letter of Intent Campaign 'Eco Challenge 100' to Run Throughout the Year
Declaration to Use Eco-Friendly Materials to Protect the Planet from the Climate Crisis

On April 23, Paju City, Gyeonggi Province, announced that it will be conducting the 'Eco Challenge 100' campaign throughout the year. As part of its efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, the city will join forces with local institutions, schools, and civic organizations to sign a letter of intent pledging to use eco-friendly materials for banners.

'Eco Challenge 100' is a campaign in which Paju City persuades and obtains the agreement of institutions, schools, and organizations to use eco-friendly banners for carbon neutrality and environmental preservation. After signing a 'letter of intent' expressing their commitment to these practices and to actively participating in addressing environmental issues, the signed letters will be made public to citizens.

In December 2023, Paju City became the first in the country to enact the "Ordinance on Promoting the Use of Eco-Friendly Materials and Activating Recycling of Banners in Paju City." Building on this, the city has implemented various policies to expand the use of eco-friendly materials and to recycle and repurpose discarded banners. In 2024, Paju City became the first local government to win the top prize in the public sector at the "Waste Banner Resource Circulation Culture Contest," co-hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Ministry of Environment, solidifying its position as a leading city in carbon neutrality policies.

Over the past year, the city has set an example by fully adopting eco-friendly materials for all banners used by the municipal government. Starting this year, Paju City plans to gradually expand this initiative from local institutions, social organizations, and schools to private companies and individual citizens. The 'Eco Challenge 100' letter of intent campaign currently being promoted marks the first step in this effort.

Jang Hyehyeon, head of the Architectural Design Division, stated, "Responding to the climate crisis cannot be achieved by the administration alone. Voluntary participation from citizens and the local community is more important than anything else. Through 'Eco Challenge 100,' let us work together to build the foundation for Paju as a carbon-neutral city."
