Kim Kyungsoo Visits Gwangju and Jeonju to Engage Honam Voters
"Gwangju to Become an AI-Centered City... Fostering Local Talent as Well"
Kim Kyungsoo, former governor of South Gyeongsang Province and a preliminary presidential candidate of the Democratic Party, has begun efforts to win the support of voters in the Honam region ahead of the regional primary scheduled for April 26. Kim has announced a plan to develop Honam as a city centered on artificial intelligence (AI).
During his Honam tour on April 22, Kim unveiled the "Gwangju-Jeonnam Megacity Plan" as a key pledge for the region. This aligns with his previously advocated policy of establishing megacities in five major regions. To achieve this, Kim pledged to provide more than 5 trillion won in autonomous budget support and to build an extensive metropolitan transportation network.
As a region-specific pledge for Honam, Kim proposed fostering Gwangju as an AI-centered city. His strategy includes building AI computing infrastructure and designating a mega sandbox policy.
He also announced plans to establish a system for nurturing AI talent by investing in world-class, specialized research universities, enabling local universities, research institutes, and companies to collaborate. In addition to AI, he promised to address longstanding local demands in the Jeonnam area, such as establishing a new medical school.
On the same day, Kim visited Jeonju and Gwangju to connect with voters in the Honam region. He held meetings with party members from North Jeolla and South Jeolla at the Democratic Party's North Jeolla and Gwangju offices, and also visited Yangdong Market in Gwangju to listen to public opinion. Throughout his schedule, Kim shared his experience in local administration and emphasized regional development.
