Designation of Pungam-dong and Hwajeong 2-dong as Pilot Areas
Gwangju Seogu Facilities Management Corporation (Chairman Hwang Bongju) has designated Pungam-dong and Hwajeong 2-dong as pilot areas and is implementing a 'recyclable item and day-specific collection system' starting this month.
According to the corporation on April 22, this system was introduced to address the problem of recyclable items being mixed or damaged and ultimately disposed of as waste, rather than being recycled, during the process of mixed disposal in single-family homes, apartment complexes, and commercial areas.
The 'recyclable item and day-specific collection system' aims to increase the accuracy of waste separation and enhance the effectiveness of resource recycling by designating specific days for the disposal of certain recyclable items.
On Mondays and Wednesdays, residents must separate and dispose of plastics, PET bottles, paper, and paper packs; on Tuesdays and Thursdays, cans, scrap metal, and empty bottles; and on Fridays and Saturdays, styrofoam and vinyl.
To ensure the smooth implementation of the system, the corporation is conducting promotional activities using banners and leaflets for residents in the pilot areas, and is working together with Seogu District Office to run joint campaigns, making multifaceted efforts to encourage participation.
As a result, the item-specific collection system is being stably implemented in the pilot areas of Pungam-dong and Hwajeong 2-dong thanks to active cooperation from residents. Based on these results, the corporation plans to expand the pilot areas in the second half of the year and, in the long term, implement the system throughout the entire Seogu district.
Chairman Hwang Bongju stated, "The recyclable item-specific collection system is an essential practice for protecting our environment and a core project for establishing a virtuous cycle of resource recycling by increasing resource recovery rates. The voluntary participation and cooperation of residents are key to the success of this system."
