A legal basis has been established for local governments to support commemorative projects aimed at carrying on the spirit of the 5·18 Democratization Movement.


The Gwangju Donggu Council announced on the 20th that, during the recent 317th Extraordinary Session of the Planning and General Affairs Committee, the ordinance proposed by Council Member Hyunsook Kim?titled "Ordinance on Supporting the Succession of the Spirit of the 5·18 Democratization Movement and Commemorative Projects in Gwangju Donggu"?was passed as originally drafted.


This ordinance was prepared in consideration of Donggu’s regional characteristics, as it is home to many major historic sites of the 5·18 Democratization Movement, with the aim of systematically preserving and passing down the historical significance and spirit of the movement.


The main contents of the ordinance include: ▲specifying the types of commemorative projects related to 5·18, ▲measures to honor those who contributed to democracy, ▲support for free use of village buses on the anniversary, ▲education and promotional activities, ▲support for private organizations, and ▲the establishment of an advisory committee.


Council Member Hyunsook Kim stated, "This ordinance focuses on enabling residents of Donggu to experience the meaning of the 5·18 Democratization Movement in their daily lives," adding, "In particular, offering free village bus rides on the anniversary will be a practical measure to improve residents' access to historic sites and to remind them of the significance of the anniversary."
