People Power Party Group B Presidential Primary Debate
Former People Power Party leader Han Donghoon stated on April 20 at the party's Group B presidential primary debate that "constitutional revision cannot succeed without shortening the presidential term." In response, former Daegu Mayor Hong Joonpyo retorted, "Claiming you want to become president just to serve three years is nonsense."
The People Power Party held its first Group B primary debate at 2 p.m. that day at the ASSA Art Hall in Gangseo-gu, Seoul. The debate was attended by Representative Na, North Gyeongsang Province Governor Lee Cheolwoo, former leader Han Donghoon, and former mayor Hong Joonpyo.
Han Donghoon cited a public opinion poll showing that 62% support constitutional revision on the premise of shortening the presidential term to three years. He added, "(Hong Joonpyo) proposes holding the 2030 local elections and the presidential election at the same time," and pointed out, "Wouldn't it be difficult to push for constitutional revision when the administration loses momentum in its later years?"
In response, Hong Joonpyo said, "(Shortening the term) is an issue that comes up every presidential election," and argued, "It costs hundreds of billions of won to hold a presidential election, so saying you want to become president just to serve three years is nonsense."
Han Donghoon countered, "If we do as (Hong Joonpyo) suggests, the Democratic Party will not cooperate," and insisted, "We should give the Democratic Party the opportunity to hold a presidential election in three years and pursue constitutional revision through dialogue with them."
