Reviewing the Myung Tae-kyun and Kim Keon Hee Call
"Mrs. Kim Asked to Help Kim Sangmin Run in Uichang," Claims Emerge
The prosecution, which is investigating allegations of nomination interference involving former President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife, has summoned Kim Sangmin, a former prosecutor (35th class of the Judicial Research and Training Institute) who ran as a preliminary candidate for the People Power Party in last year's 4·10 general election.
According to the legal community on April 20, the special investigation team of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office in charge of the Myung Tae-kyun case questioned former prosecutor Kim on April 18. It is reported that prosecutors sought to determine whether Kim Keon Hee, the former First Lady, was involved in the People Power Party's nominations ahead of the general election.
Kim Keon Hee is suspected of having arranged for Kim Sangmin to receive the nomination for the Changwon Uichang district in South Gyeongsang Province by having the incumbent lawmaker for that district, former lawmaker Kim Youngsun, run instead in the Gimhae-gap district.
According to the transcript of a phone call with Kim Keon Hee, which the Myung Tae-kyun side released on February 17, Kim Keon Hee said, "Prosecutor Kim Sangmin worked very hard during the Cho Kuk investigation," and added, "Kim Youngsun is going to be cut off anyway, right?"
Kim Sangmin served in the Special Investigation Division 3 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office when Yoon Suk Yeol was the chief prosecutor there, and is known to have been partially involved in the 2019 investigation of former Justice Minister Cho Kuk.
The prosecution plans to attempt a face-to-face interrogation of Kim Keon Hee after completing its investigation of other individuals involved in the nomination interference allegations.
