Intensive Inspections at Sinsa, Gangnam, and Sincheongdam Interchanges
Gangnam-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Cho Sungmyung) will conduct a Yukgapmun gate opening and closing drill on April 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to prepare for extreme heavy rainfall during the summer.
This drill is a practical exercise simulating a Han River flood scenario and will be carried out jointly with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, focusing on intensive inspections of three Yukgapmun gates (Sinsa Interchange, Gangnam Interchange, and Sincheongdam Interchange). Yukgapmun gates are critical flood control facilities designed to prevent river water from entering the city center when the Han River water level rises. Under normal conditions, these gates serve as passageways for citizens accessing Hangang Park.
On the day of the drill, inspections will focus on the operation of hoists, gates, and frames, as well as checking for sediment and foreign matter accumulation inside the lower gate frames. The proper functioning of the gates will be verified through trial operations.
Because the drill will be conducted under conditions similar to an actual flood, pedestrian and vehicle access will be completely restricted during the specified hours. The district will collaborate with relevant agencies such as the Gangnam Police Station and the Seoul Future Hangang Headquarters to enforce vehicle control. In addition, advance notices of the restricted hours and detour routes will be provided to minimize inconvenience to citizens, including the installation of banners.
This drill is part of Gangnam-gu's regular trial operation inspections of flood control facilities, which are being conducted from April 15 to May 2. Gangnam-gu has a total of 20 major flood control facilities, including eight pumping stations such as the Daechi Rainwater Pumping Station and twelve sluice gates including the Daechi Sluice Gate. The district is conducting comprehensive inspections of these facilities, including electrical and mechanical equipment such as pumps and switchboards, the operational status of the sluice gates, and all communication equipment such as closed-circuit (CC) TVs and water level gauges.
District Mayor Cho Sungmyung stated, "As we expect localized torrential downpours due to abnormal weather again this summer, we are thoroughly inspecting key flood control facilities," and added, "We will establish a prompt response system centered on the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters to thoroughly protect the lives and property of our residents against natural disasters."
