"Acts Interfering with Students' Participation in Classes"
Amid an incident at a university medical school where the personal information of students who participated in classes was disclosed and subjected to criticism and ridicule, the Ministry of Education announced that it has requested an investigation by the National Police Agency.
According to the Ministry of Education on April 18, first-year pre-medical students of the class of 2024 at the university may face expulsion if they receive two consecutive academic warnings for not participating in classes during the first semester of this year, in accordance with school regulations. As a result, some senior students, concerned that the class of 2024 would participate in classes to avoid expulsion, reportedly held meetings and met with their juniors individually.
The Ministry of Education also stated that it has requested an investigation on suspicion of violations of the Anti-Stalking Act, the Information and Communications Network Act, and the Criminal Act’s coercion offense, as posts and comments disclosing the real names of participants and containing criticism and ridicule were made on 'MediStaff', a community for medical students and doctors.
According to the Ministry of Education, multiple students and parents have filed complaints with the Medical School Student Protection and Reporting Center regarding the same issue, and the perpetrators have been identified.
Previously, the government announced its intention to respond strictly, including requesting investigations, to acts that infringe on other students’ right to study, such as forcing someone to take a leave of absence or requiring proof of a leave of absence.
A Ministry of Education official stated, "We will respond firmly, including requesting police investigations, to any acts that interfere with other students' participation in classes."
