Artificial intelligence (AI) startup 'Perplexity AI' (hereinafter Perplexity) is reportedly in talks with Samsung Electronics to integrate its AI assistant into Samsung devices, Bloomberg News reported on the 17th.
Bloomberg cited anonymous sources stating that Perplexity has already reached a similar agreement with Lenovo Group's Motorola. The partnership with Motorola is expected to be announced this month.
Sources said that details regarding the collaboration with Samsung Electronics are still under discussion. Options being considered include offering Perplexity as the default AI assistant or pre-installing the Perplexity Android app on Samsung phones.
Perplexity, Samsung Electronics, and Motorola declined to comment on the report.
Perplexity is an AI search startup founded in 2022 by Aravind Srinivas and others from OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT. From the beginning, it has provided AI-based search services and competes with companies like Google and OpenAI. Amid the AI boom, its corporate valuation reached approximately $9 billion (about 13 trillion KRW) at the end of last year.
Alphabet, Google's parent company, has established a broad partnership with Samsung Electronics, providing the Android operating system (OS) and AI models such as Gemini to Samsung devices including the Galaxy series.
Bloomberg reported that Samsung Electronics has been developing its relationship with Perplexity for several months.
Samsung Electronics' investment subsidiary, Samsung Next, invested in Perplexity last year. Sources said Samsung Electronics is discussing additional investments in Perplexity in the near future.
