A Korean couple has sparked public outrage after their story of experiencing racial discrimination during a trip to Italy was revealed.
On the 1st, a video titled "Italian Youth Taking Racism to the Extreme" was posted on the YouTube channel 'K-Jinn.' Mr. A, in his 50s, who visited Lake Como in Lombardy, northern Italy, with his wife on March 27, said, "We encountered a group of students here," and added, "They used the derogatory Asian slur 'ching chong' towards us."
After starting to film, Mr. A asked the students in English, "Did you just say 'ching chong'?" When the students replied "Yes," Mr. A warned them, "That word is offensive. Using it makes you a racist."
However, the students met again with the couple at the train station and shouted "ching chong" loudly while jeering at Mr. A and his wife. The video also captured a middle-aged teacher leading the students interfering with Mr. A’s filming. Mr. A lamented, "The teacher, who had remained silent when the students shouted 'ching chong,' only stepped in to stop the filming."
Mr. A added, "Although it was not captured on video, as we were about to leave, one student threw a water bottle," and expressed deep disappointment, saying, "The students casually used racist expressions, and the teacher did nothing to stop them."
Later, Mr. A detailed the incident in an interview with KBS. He explained, "At the train station, the group loudly chanted 'ching chong' and jeered, which terrified my wife. One of the kids threw a water bottle. They continued to jeer with 'ching chong,' but I thought it would be dangerous to respond, so we left the scene as it was."
