Samsung Electro-Mechanics will supply multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) on a large scale to BYD, China's largest electric vehicle company.
According to the electronic components industry on the 15th, Samsung Electro-Mechanics recently received final approval from BYD for MLCC supply and has begun full-scale delivery. MLCCs are key components that ensure stable current flow and are used in various electronic devices such as smartphones, computers, home appliances, automobiles, 5G communications, and the Internet of Things.
Typically, 3,000 to 10,000 MLCCs are installed in a vehicle, and as vehicle electrification advances, the number per vehicle is increasing to around 12,000 to 18,000. In particular, BYD surpassed Tesla in the U.S. last year to become the global leader in electric vehicle sales and aims to produce 5.5 million electric vehicles this year. The industry expects that even with multiple suppliers participating, Samsung Electro-Mechanics will secure a significant supply volume.
This contract appears to have been finalized after Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong personally visited BYD's headquarters in China recently. After attending the China Development Forum last month, Chairman Lee moved to Shenzhen and met with Wang Chuanfu, Chairman of BYD, visiting the headquarters again for the first time in seven years since 2018. He is also reported to have met with Xiaomi Chairman Lei Jun and inspected an electric vehicle factory, exploring potential collaboration in the automotive electronics business.
