Gwangju Dong-gu (District Mayor Lim Taek) announced on the 15th that it has been finally selected for the '2025 Neighborhood Commercial District Power Plant Support Project' by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.

The Neighborhood Commercial District Power Plant Support Project, hosted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, is a project in which private experts such as commercial district planners, local governments, merchants, and residents cooperate to plan and implement sustainable development strategies for commercial districts. Dong-gu was the only district selected in Gwangju.

This selection was achieved by overcoming a 6:1 competition ratio in the newly introduced network-type business field this year, through the collaborative efforts of Gwangjiju Co., Ltd., which operates local dining and plans local content in Dongmyeong-dong, the Dongmyeong Community Coexistence Council, where residents themselves develop Dongmyeong-dong, and the Dong-gu Urban Regeneration Support Center.

Dongmyeong-dong in Dong-gu, the target area for the project, is a hot place where attractive individual brands are emerging thanks to the startups of young merchant representatives. However, the short experience due to market conditions has been pointed out as a limitation, and there is a growing call to form a network for coexistence in the alley rather than wasteful competition.

In response, Dong-gu will materialize the 'Alley Leader Dongmyeong Crew,' a collaboration model of young entrepreneurs and residents in the Dongmyeong commercial district, and promote projects to establish a foundation for alley-based commercial districts. The main projects include ▲ designation of alley-type shopping districts ▲ joint marketing under the 'Dongmyeong Brand Town' ▲ production of an alley-type shopping district archiving book ▲ selection and capacity building of the 'Dongmyeong Crew' alley leader group.

Through this, Dong-gu expects to enhance the self-sustainability of the commercial district by designating Dongmyeong-dong as an alley-type shopping district and to create a differentiated alley business model unique to Dongmyeong-dong based on the proactive problem-solving network of local merchants and residents.

Lim Taek, District Mayor, said, "With this project selection, Dongmyeong-dong has established a foothold to leap forward as the representative brand-centered alley commercial district of Gwangju," adding, "We will do our best to realize a warm alley economy created together by residents and merchants, rather than individual brands striving for survival alone."
