Securing the Golden Hour and Saving a Comrade's Life
Through Swift Emergency Response and CPR
The Navy Submarine Command (hereinafter referred to as 'Submarine Command') awarded commendations on the 15th to six individuals, including Sergeant Lee Jinseok, Sergeant Lee Siu, and Corporal Oh Siheon, who saved the life of a fellow soldier through swift emergency response.
On February 2nd at around 7:40 PM, Corporal Oh discovered a fellow soldier who had suddenly collapsed in the barracks. Observing that the soldier was unconscious and had unstable breathing and pulse, Corporal Oh immediately secured the airway and performed CPR. He continued administering CPR in the ambulance while the soldier was being transported to the Naval Medical Center emergency room, and upon arrival, he thoroughly explained the patient's condition and the actions taken, enabling the military doctor to make an accurate and prompt assessment.
Sergeant Lee Siu assisted Corporal Oh by performing artificial respiration and prepared the ambulance for rapid transport. Sergeant Lee Jinseok alternated with Corporal Oh in performing CPR inside the ambulance, while Private Park Jungwoo operated the automated external defibrillator (AED) during transport, providing additional emergency care.
According to the Medical Comprehensive Situation Center of the Medical Command, the patient's condition was extremely critical, but thanks to the swift emergency response by Corporal Oh and his fellow soldiers, the golden hour was secured and a precious life was saved.
Corporal Oh stated, "As someone who dreamed of becoming a healthcare professional while studying nursing before enlisting, I simply did what I was supposed to do. I am grateful that my efforts helped save my fellow soldier's life," and added, "I hope my colleague makes a speedy recovery."
The mother of the soldier who overcame the crisis thanks to the efforts of his comrades expressed her gratitude in a handwritten letter, saying, "My son received proper CPR from his fellow soldiers during a critical moment, and the unit personnel also took great care of him, so he is now healthy and doing well. Although I hope such incidents do not happen again, this experience made me realize that the military medical system is well established. Once again, I want to thank the unit and his comrades for saving my son's precious life."
