Mayor Park Hyungjoon and Superintendent Kim Seokjun Attend with 15 Organization Heads
Support for Busan Tourism High School, Busanjin Girls' Commercial High School, and Busan Navy Science and Technology High School
Which school in Busan will be selected as a contract-type specialized high school this year? Three high schools in the Busan area have applied for the competition, aiming to be among the ten schools selected nationwide.
The Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Hyungjoon) and the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Kim Seokjun) will sign a memorandum of understanding at 10 a.m. on the 14th in the international conference room of the Office of Education, together with companies, universities, and other organizations, to foster contract-type specialized high schools.
This agreement has been arranged so that local institutions can join forces to support the Ministry of Education's competition for the selection of contract-type specialized high schools.
The core of contract-type specialized high schools is the collaboration of various local institutions, including local governments, education offices, companies, and universities, to improve the quality of education at specialized high schools and nurture customized talent needed for local industries.
Up to ten contract-type specialized high schools are expected to be selected nationwide this year. Selected schools will receive special grants from the Ministry of Education ranging from 3.5 billion to 4.5 billion KRW over five years, along with autonomy in curriculum organization and school management.
This year, three schools are applying: Busan Tourism High School, Busanjin Girls' Commercial High School, and Busan Navy Science and Technology High School. Each school will establish agreements with relevant organizations in their respective fields to accelerate the nurturing of customized talent. A total of 15 organizations, including the city, will participate in this agreement.
Busan Tourism High School will focus on the tourism MICE industry, Busanjin Girls' Commercial High School on the finance industry, and Busan Navy Science and Technology High School will provide career paths not only for students to become navy non-commissioned officers but also in shipbuilding equipment-related fields.
With this agreement, participating organizations will cooperate in establishing school-specific plans for fostering contract-type specialized high schools, including the growth of students as local talent, building sustainable governance, and planning investment in facilities and resources. After selection, they will provide administrative and financial support accordingly.
The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education will prepare and submit a business plan to the Ministry of Education by April 24, and the Ministry of Education is expected to announce the final results in June.
Mayor Park Hyungjoon said, "This agreement is an important stepping stone for fostering specialized high schools closely linked to local industries, and we will actively support the selection in the competition. Through this, we will lay the foundation for local talent to grow and settle in the region. We will do our best to nurture key talent to lead Busan's future industries by establishing a virtuous cycle structure where local governments, schools, and companies coexist and prosper together."
