A Promise: "We Will Not Forget"
The Gwangju Office of Education will hold a memorial ceremony at Mokpo New Port in Jeonnam on the 14th to mark the 11th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry disaster. The event is intended to honor the 304 victims of the tragedy, especially the 250 Danwon High School students and 11 accompanying teachers, and to share in the pain of their bereaved families.
Gwangju Office of Education has designated the period from the 14th to the 18th as a Commemorative Education Week to mark the 11th anniversary of the Sewol ferry disaster. During this week, memorial events such as wearing yellow ribbons, posting tribute messages, declaring commitments to safety practices, operating a cyber memorial hall, and installing pinwheels will be held. According to the Gwangju Office of Education on the 11th, Superintendent Lee Jungseon, Deputy Superintendent Choi Seungbok, Policy Director Ko Inja, Education Director Baek Kisang, and Administration Director Park Junsu will attend the ceremony to deliver memorial speeches, lay flowers, and participate in remembrance activities such as attaching yellow ribbons.
Starting with this memorial ceremony, the Office of Education has designated the five days from the 14th to the 18th as the "11th Anniversary Sewol Ferry Disaster Memorial Education Week," during which various commemorative events will be held, including: attaching yellow ribbons, posting memorial messages, pledging to practice safe education, operating an online memorial hall, and installing Sewol windmills.
On the 16th, there will also be a "Pledge Card Signing" event where main office staff will write their commitment to "never forget" on postcards bearing the names of the 304 victims. The signed postcards will be displayed in the book cafe.

Superintendent Lee stated, "The Sewol Ferry disaster is an unforgettable wound and lesson for all of us," and added, "The Office of Education will prioritize student safety above all and foster a culture where everyone takes responsibility."
