Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital announced on the 10th that the Korean Society of Coloproctology, chaired by Professor Kim Hyungrok of the Department of Colorectal Surgery, recently held its '58th Annual Scientific Meeting'.


This academic conference covered a wide range of topics including the latest diagnostic and treatment methods for colorectal diseases and surgical techniques, serving as a platform for knowledge sharing and networking among domestic medical professionals in the field of colorectal surgery.


On the first day, the conference began with presentations of abstracts on basic and translational research, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and oncology. In-depth discussions followed, including the 'Next Generation' session for the growth and development of surgeons, as well as sessions on hernia treatment and chemotherapy. In particular, sessions on the updated version 2.0 of the colorectal cancer clinical practice guidelines, benign colorectal diseases, and the use of K-QIPS in colorectal surgery drew significant attention.


On the second day, there was a session by the Committee for the Protection of the Ethically Vulnerable, themed 'The Hippocratic Oath of Colorectal Surgeons', and a session on minimally invasive surgery (MIS) discussing the optimal methods for rectal cancer surgery. The Kwangyeon Kim Memorial Lecture and a lecture by Chairman Kim Hyungrok were also held, along with the KSCP Policy Forum, which focused on 'The Essence and Reform Directions of Healthcare Issues in Korea', allowing for in-depth discussions on current issues in the medical field.


On the final day, sessions were held on the role of surgeons as endoscopy experts, new technologies in colonoscopy, and treatment methods for rectal and anal diseases. In particular, there was active discussion on abdominal rectopexy for the treatment of pelvic floor disorders.


This academic conference was highly regarded for sharing the latest insights into the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal diseases and presenting research achievements, making a significant contribution to the advancement of the field of colorectal surgery in Korea.


Chairman Kim Hyungrok stated, "This academic conference was an important venue for the policy forum on the sustainability of colorectal surgery and for surgeons to discuss practical policy development measures based on clinical experience," adding, "Various topics were intensively discussed, including the latest treatments for pelvic floor disorders such as anticancer therapy, wound and stoma care, and guidelines for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease."
