China criticized the U.S. for filing a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over reciprocal tariffs, stating that the tariffs would further destabilize global trade.
According to China's state-run media Global Times on the 9th (local time), the Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated, "The U.S. tariff measures seriously violate WTO regulations," adding, "The additional 50% increase is a mistake on top of another mistake and represents unilateral bullying by the U.S."
It further added, "China will firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests in accordance with WTO regulations and will steadfastly uphold the multilateral trading system and the international economic and trade order."
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on the 2nd an additional 50% tariff as a retaliatory measure against China's counter-tariffs on the 34% reciprocal tariffs. When combined with the 10% tariffs imposed in February and March, a total tariff of 104% has been applied to Chinese products.
China announced that starting from the 10th, it will raise the additional tariff rate on all U.S. imports from the existing 34% to 84%, intensifying the U.S.-China trade war.
