Police Conduct Search of Sky Daily Over Alleged Arrest of Chinese Spy on Martial Law Day

The Cyber Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced that on the morning of the 9th, around 9 a.m., they conducted a raid and seizure of Sky Daily's office and affiliated reporters in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, for about three hours. This forced investigation was carried out about two months after the investigation began.

According to the police, Sky Daily and its affiliated reporters are suspected of publishing false articles. They are also accused of obstructing the official duties of the Central Election Commission employees and defaming them.

Earlier, on January 16 of this year, Sky Daily published an article titled "99 Chinese Arrested at Election Training Institute Transferred to US Military Base in Japan," reporting that "during the emergency martial law, the South Korean and US military authorities transferred Chinese spies arrested at the Election Commission in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, to the US military base in Japan."

In response, on January 20 of this year, the Election Commission filed a complaint with the police against Sky Daily and the reporter who wrote the article for charges including obstruction of official duties and defamation, and the Cyber Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has been investigating the case.

A representative of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency stated, "We plan to strictly investigate acts of fake news online in the future."
