24-Hour Crackdown System in Place
Focus on the Five Major Election Crimes
Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 9th that, ahead of the 21st presidential election (June 3), it has established election crime investigation situation rooms at all local police stations and has entered a full-scale crackdown system.
Given the tight election schedule, Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency plans to operate a 24-hour response system centered around the situation rooms to prevent social conflict and confusion and to support a fair election. Intelligence gathering on various illegal acts will be strengthened, and cooperation with related organizations such as the National Election Commission and the prosecution will also be enhanced.
The crackdown targets the five major election crimes: bribery, spreading false information, involvement of public officials in elections, election-related violence, and illegal mobilization of groups. Gwangju police plan to track not only the perpetrators but also the forces behind the crimes and the sources of funding. They also stated their intention to investigate regardless of political status or party affiliation.
Spreading false information via social media, manipulation of opinion polls, and illegal acts related to party primaries have also been included as key targets of the crackdown.
A Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency official stated, "We will strictly maintain political neutrality during the investigation of election crimes and respond firmly by mobilizing all investigative resources," adding, "The reports and cooperation of citizens are also important."
