The Gyeonggi-do Economic Science Promotion Agency is calling for universities to participate in the 'Regional Innovation-Centered University Support System (RISE),' which aims for the co-growth of regions and universities.
RISE is a project by the Ministry of Education that transfers university financial support authority to local governments to support university innovation tailored to regional characteristics and development strategies.
Gyeonggi-do RISE was selected as the best city/province for the RISE project plan by the Ministry of Education in February this year, securing an additional 13.5 billion KRW in national funding, bringing the total budget to 65.8 billion KRW to foster region-customized talent and establish a foundation for mutual growth between universities and local communities.
Applications for the project will be accepted from the 2nd to the 12th of next month. Final selections will be announced at the end of May, and the selected universities will begin full-scale project implementation starting in June.
The call is open to general universities and junior colleges with enrollment quotas within the province. Support types include ▲Future Growth Industry Leading ▲Regional Cluster Development ▲Lifelong Vocational Education Hub.
Gyeonggi-do plans to select about 40 institutions through this call, including 14 general universities, 12 junior colleges, and 4 consortiums.
Depending on the type, general universities can receive up to 4 billion KRW, junior colleges up to 2 billion KRW, and lifelong vocational education hub universities participating as consortiums can receive up to 1.5 billion KRW.
For this project, Gyeonggi-do analyzed 75 universities and the industrial structure within the province to establish a customized support system consisting of 4 projects and 16 unit tasks.
First, aiming to nurture local talent and build an innovative ecosystem for employment and entrepreneurship settlement, four major projects and 16 unit tasks will be pursued: ▲Gyeonggi G7 Future Growth Industry Development ▲Gyeonggi Regional Innovation Cluster Development ▲Lifelong Vocational Education Innovation for Life and Continuity ▲Realization of Mutual Growth through Regional-Industry-Academia Cooperation.
Additionally, various tasks that enable practical cooperation between regions and industries have been proposed, including region-based industries such as manufacturing and materials, parts, and equipment (SoBuJang), growth-driving industries in northern Gyeonggi, and ultra-wide area linkage sectors.
Universities participating in the call should submit a RISE project plan that organically links and promotes the 16 unit tasks according to their specialized fields.
The Gyeonggi-do Economic Science Promotion Agency will hold a 'RISE Project Plan Writing and Performance Indicator Training' on the 15th at 2 PM at the Gyeonggi Hall in Gwanggyo, Suwon City.
Kim Hyun-gon, head of the agency, stated, "Gyeonggi-do RISE is an innovation strategy to nurture talent leading Gyeonggi-do’s future industries and to resolve regional imbalances. Through this, Gyeonggi-do will leap forward as a 'global innovation capital of mutual growth through regional-industry-academia cooperation.'"
