"Gaza is a Killing Field"
United Nations Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres expressed opposition to Israel's new proposal to control the humanitarian aid process within the Gaza Strip in Palestine.
At a press conference held at the UN Headquarters in New York on the 8th (local time), Secretary-General Guterres said, "There is a risk that even the last calorie, the last grain of grain will be ruthlessly restricted and controlled," adding, "We will not participate in any agreement that does not respect humanitarian principles such as humanity, fairness, independence, and neutrality at all."
Earlier, the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), a Palestinian affairs organization under the Israeli Ministry of Defense, announced that it proposed a 'structured monitoring and aid entry mechanism' for the Gaza Strip last week in meetings with UN agencies and international aid organizations. COGAT claimed that the new mechanism was designed to ensure that relief supplies are not diverted to Hamas and are provided to civilians in need.
According to the United Nations, since the Israeli military resumed attacks on the Gaza Strip early last month, the entry of relief supplies such as food has been suspended. Secretary-General Guterres called Gaza a "killing field" and said civilians are trapped in an endless cycle of death, urging the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, a permanent ceasefire, and full humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip.
