Chonnam National University Hospital (Director: Jung Shin) announced on the 8th that it recently co-hosted a Korea-UK collaborative seminar with the University of London.


The seminar, held on the afternoon of the 4th at the main conference room on the first floor of the Biomedical Research Support Center at Chonnam National University Hospital, was attended by over 50 participants both online and offline, including Shonan Kamakura General Hospital in Japan, University of Galway in Ireland, CHA University, Chonnam National University Regional Innovation Leading Research Center, Korean medical device companies such as CGBio and Orland Bio, among others.


The Korea-UK collaborative seminar has been organized by the Department of Cardiology at Chonnam National University Hospital since 2021. It is led by Professor Jung Myungho (Emeritus Professor at Chonnam National University Hospital and Gwangju Veterans Hospital), Professor Ahn Youngkeun (Director of the Cell Regeneration Research Center at Chonnam National University Hospital), Professor Hong Youngjoon (Director of the Korea Cardiovascular Stent Research Institute), Professor Kim Juhan (Department of Cardiology at Chonnam National University Hospital), Professor Shim Dooseon (Head of Cardiology), Professor John Martin (University College London), and Professor Anthony Mathur (Queen Mary University of London).


During this international seminar, discussions were held on overcoming the limitations of conventional metallic drug-eluting stents, focusing on polymer-free drug-eluting stents, re-endothelialization-promoting stents, and biodegradable cardiovascular stents. Additionally, clinicians, scientists, and industry experts gathered to discuss various technologies currently in development and future directions, with topics such as real-time blood pressure monitoring using wireless pressure sensors and the application of AI-based SMART technology in cardiovascular disease.


This Korea-UK collaborative seminar was chaired by Professor Jung Myungho, Professor Ahn Youngkeun, Han Donggeun (CEO of Orland Bio), Professor John Martin, and Professor Anthony Mathur. Presentations were given by Professor Shim Dooseon, Professor Lee Dongwon (Chonnam National University), Kim Taehun (Team Leader at CGBio), Song Deokhyeon (PhD candidate at CHA University), Professor John Martin, Professor Anthony Mathur, Professor Andreas Baumbach (Queen Mary University of London), Cardiologist Daniel Jones and Cardiologist Krishnaraj Rathod, Professor Shigeru Saito (Shonan Kamakura General Hospital, Japan), and Professor Patrick Serruys (University of Galway, Ireland).


Professor Shim Dooseon (Head of Cardiology at Chonnam National University Hospital) said, "We plan to continue regular international seminars and academic collaboration for information sharing between Korea and the UK, which has been ongoing for the past five years." He added, "With the development of new cardiovascular treatment technologies following the 'Tiger Stent' and 'Tiger Revolution Stent,' we expect to make significant contributions to enhancing the medical technology and research standards of Chonnam National University Hospital."
