Japan Extends North Korea Sanctions for 2 Years... Ban on Exports, Imports, and Ship Entry Maintained

As Part of Implementing UN Security Council Resolutions

The Japanese government announced on the 8th that it will extend its independent sanctions against North Korea, which are set to expire on the 13th, for two more years.

Yoshimasa Hayashi, Chief Cabinet Secretary and spokesperson for the Japanese government, announced at the Cabinet meeting on the morning of the same day that they had decided to extend the sanctions banning exports and imports with North Korea and the entry of North Korean-flagged vessels into Japan for two years.

Ships that have called at North Korean ports and vessels subject to sanctions under United Nations Security Council resolutions will also be prohibited from entering Japan.

Minister Hayashi stated, "North Korea continues to conduct ballistic missile launches, and the issue of Japanese abductees by North Korea remains unresolved. Taking these circumstances comprehensively into account and from the perspective of ensuring the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions, we have decided to extend the sanctions."
