Yongin City to Establish '3 Downtowns, 1 Sub-downtown, and 3 Regional Centers'
Target Population Set at 1,524,000 by 2040
Idong and Namsa Designated as Industrial Downtowns for System Semiconductor Complex
Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province is reorganizing its existing '2 downtown' spatial structure into '3 downtowns, 1 sub-downtown, and 3 regional centers.'
Yongin City announced on the 8th that it held a public hearing on the 4th after preparing the '2040 Yongin Basic Urban Plan' with this content. The basic urban plan is a comprehensive plan that presents the fundamental spatial structure and long-term development direction of the city. It serves as a guideline for establishing urban management plans, such as designating land use zones and districts.
Experts are discussing the plan at the '204-Year Yongin City Master Plan Public Hearing' held at Ace Hall, Yongin City Hall on the 4th. Provided by Yongin City
The plan sets the future vision as a 'future advanced city where people and nature coexist' and presents four major goals: ▲economically self-sufficient city ▲pleasant residential city ▲connected central city ▲clean and sustainable city. It also reflects natural and social population growth, planning a target population of 1,524,000 by 2040.
In particular, to actively respond to the changed conditions since the existing '2035 Yongin Basic Urban Plan,' the city reorganized the urban spatial structure from the existing 2 downtown system to '3 downtowns, 1 sub-downtown, and 3 regional centers.' The newly established 3 downtowns are ▲economic downtown centered around GTX Guseong Station ▲administrative downtown centered around City Hall ▲industrial downtown centered on Idong and Namsa, where the national semiconductor industrial complex will be located.
This reflects Samsung Electronics' investment of 320 trillion won in the 7.78 million square meters Idong-Namsa 'Yongin Advanced System Semiconductor Cluster National Industrial Complex' and the 16,000-household scale Idong-eup Deokseong, Muk, and Simi-ri area 'Yongin Idong Public Housing District (2.28 million square meters).'
The Wonsam-myeon area, where the 4.15 million square meters 'Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex' will be built, is planned as a sub-downtown. In addition, Pogok and Mohyeon and Baegam are designated as regional centers for tourism and agricultural functions, and Yangji is designated as a regional center for logistics functions.
Residents who have opinions on the plan can visit the city's Urban Policy Division by the 23rd to submit them in writing or send them by mail or email. The prepared plan will be finalized within the year after collecting residents' opinions, hearing the city council's opinions, consulting the city urban planning committee, reviewing by the Gyeonggi Province urban planning committee, and approval by Gyeonggi Province.
Lee Sang-il, Mayor of Yongin City, said, "Yongin City is opening a tremendous path of change with semiconductor production lines and research and development investments by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix totaling 502 trillion won, as well as the development of the Police University site and the lifting of the Songtan water source protection zone," adding, "We will actively collect opinions from citizens and experts to develop the city in a good direction."
