HD Hyundai Partners with US Defense Company Anduril to Develop Unmanned Naval Vessels

Joint Development of Core AI-Based Unmanned Surface Vessel Solutions

HD Hyundai is partnering with the U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) defense company Anduril Industries to develop unmanned surface vessels (USVs).

On the 4th, HD Hyundai announced that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the development and market entry of unmanned surface vessels with Anduril at the Hyundai Building in Gyedong, Seoul. Anduril is a U.S.-based AI tech company specializing in defense. Leveraging advanced technology, it supplies various products such as mission control systems, surveillance and reconnaissance systems, unmanned submarines, and drones to the U.S. Navy, Department of Defense, and the Australian Department of Defense.

Through this agreement, the two companies have agreed to combine HD Hyundai’s autonomous navigation technology with Anduril’s autonomous mission execution solutions to develop unmanned surface vessels. Specifically, HD Hyundai will develop AI vessel autonomy technology by integrating core AI autonomous ship technologies?such as navigation automation, engine automation, and integrated safety control?that it has developed and commercialized so far, with vessel-specific functions. Anduril will be responsible for developing the autonomous mission execution system (Mission Autonomy) that can automate swarm control and mission execution of unmanned surface vessels on the battlefield.

Joo Won-ho, Head of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Special Ship Business, stated, “We will promptly realize the development of crew-reducing vessels and unmanned vessels using advanced AI technology to become a driving force for the Navy’s acquisition of manned-unmanned combined forces and for vessel exports.” Brian Schimpf, Co-founder and CEO of Anduril, said, “We expect that cooperation with HD Hyundai will greatly help us enter the global unmanned vessel market, not only in the U.S.”

Alongside the development of unmanned surface vessels, HD Hyundai is advancing AI vessel autonomy technology to gradually automate manned vessels in both domestic and export markets. Through this, it is expected to address the reduction of military service personnel and crew shortages caused by the demographic cliff.
