"Mokpo Remembrance Ceremony" at Mokpo New Port on the 16th
On the 11th anniversary of the Sewol ferry disaster, various memorial events will be held in Mokpo, Jeonnam, where the Sewol ferry is currently located.
The Mokpo Regional Joint Action Committee for Remembering Sewol, which consists of 25 civic organizations and is co-chaired by Park Hyunsuk and Baek Eunkyung, has declared April 7 to 30 as the memorial period for the 11th anniversary of the Sewol disaster and will hold commemorative events such as a remembrance ceremony and a cultural festival.
At 4 p.m. on April 13, the "Sewol 11th Anniversary Mokpo Remembrance Cultural Festival" will take place at Mokpo Peace Square. This event aims to inform citizens about the unresolved issues of the Sewol disaster and to commemorate together. Various cultural performances will be held, including pre-event art experiences such as making yellow paper airplanes, a youth orchestra, pansori, memorial poetry, music performances, and citizen participation performances.
On the 16th, marking the 11th anniversary, the "Sewol Ferry Disaster 11th Anniversary Mokpo Remembrance Ceremony" will be held at 3 p.m. at Mokpo New Port.
The remembrance ceremony, held every year in front of the Sewol ferry hull, is an event to reaffirm the commitment to uncovering the truth of the disaster, punishing those responsible, comforting the victims, and promising to build a safer society. About 20 bereaved family members from the 0416 Danwon High School Families Association are expected to attend this year’s ceremony.
The "4th 416 Life and Safety Jeonnam Youth Art Contest," in which local youth can participate, will also be held. The contest, themed "The Safe Country I Wish For and the Memory of Sewol," is open to all elementary, middle, and high school students currently attending school in Jeonnam.
In addition, various cultural events are scheduled, including the "Mokpo Remembrance Screening," featuring independent films about the Sewol disaster such as "Three Greetings" and "Ten Years of Sinking, Zero Sum," as well as the "Mokpo Remembrance Exhibition," where visitors can appreciate artworks created by artists on the theme of the Sewol disaster.
Park Hyunsuk, representative of the Mokpo Regional Joint Action Committee for Remembering Sewol, said, "In order not to return to the time before the Sewol disaster, we have spent the past 11 years working to uncover the truth of the disaster, hold those responsible accountable, and build a society where life is respected and safety is ensured. However, we are still faced with unresolved truths, incomplete accountability, and recurring disasters. As we endure the undermining of constitutional order by Yoon Sukyeol and forces colluding in insurrection, we wish to reaffirm our commitment to respecting life and building a safer society."
