Now in its 18th year, the CPU involves university (graduate) students analyzing problems presented by companies and research institutions using patent big data, and proposing future research and development strategies and commercialization plans.

This year, 28 leading domestic and international companies and institutions, including Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor Company, POSCO, and SK Hynix, are participating and have presented 30 problems.

The prize money has also increased significantly. The Presidential Award has been raised from 15 million KRW to 20 million KRW, and the Prime Minister’s Award from 12 million KRW to 15 million KRW, which the Korean Intellectual Property Office expects will motivate participation in the CPU.

Awards recipients will also receive benefits such as membership in the ‘Next-Generation Intellectual Property Leaders (YIPL)’ program and preferential employment opportunities with sponsoring companies. The Next-Generation Intellectual Property Leaders program is a gathering of CPU awardees that offers CEO lectures, leadership and intellectual property courses, visits to local industries, and employment counseling (mentoring).

Applications for CPU participation and task details can be found on the competition website or by contacting the Intellectual Property Workforce Development Office at the Korea Invention Promotion Association.

Kim Jeong-gyun, Director of the Industrial Property Policy Bureau at the Korean Intellectual Property Office, said, “We hope that participating students will directly analyze patent big data and develop both insight into the industry and the ability to utilize patents through the process of establishing patent strategies and planning commercialization.” He added, “We ask for the interest and participation of many university (graduate) students and professors in the CPU.”
