Court: "Murdered a Friend of 20 Years for Valuables... Exceptionally Heinous Crime"
A man in his 60s, who was in a financially difficult situation, received a heavy sentence after being convicted of murdering a long-time acquaintance who had helped him, with the intention of stealing valuables.
According to the legal community on the 4th, the Suncheon Branch of the Gwangju District Court Criminal Division 1 (Presiding Judge Kim Yongkyu) sentenced A (age 65), who was arrested and indicted on charges of robbery and murder, to 35 years in prison the previous day.
On November 3rd last year, at around 11:14 p.m., A broke into the home of his acquaintance B in Sinwol-dong, Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do, intending to steal valuables. When discovered, he stabbed and killed B with a weapon found in the kitchen. He was brought to trial on these charges.
Investigations revealed that the victim, B, had maintained a friendship with A for over 20 years, was aware of A's difficult circumstances, and had continuously provided support, even preparing side dishes for him.
In the verdict, the court stated, "This is an anti-humanitarian crime in which a person's life was taken for economic gain," and pointed out, "The betrayal of targeting a benefactor as the victim is extremely grave, and the nature of the crime is exceptionally heinous."
